Dolomites
Why the pale mountains are so special, and what alpenglow and legends have to do with it.
Between Kronplatz and the nature park: San Vigilio di Marebbe lies at 1,201 metres in a side valley of Val Badia, right where the Dolomites begin. On one side rises Kronplatz, South Tyrol’s best-known ski mountain. On the other, the Rudo valley leads into the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
From our hotel you reach both directly: the slopes or a trail in the morning, a mountain hut in the afternoon, and in the evening the peaks in the last light. Here is what awaits you around San Vigilio.

Al Plan de Mareo
In Ladin the village is called “Al Plan”, in German St. Vigil in Enneberg. It is the main village of the municipality of Marebbe, the largest Ladin municipality in South Tyrol by area. More than nine out of ten residents speak Ladin, a language that grew out of the Latin of the Romans over 2,000 years ago. In everyday life you will hear three languages, often in the same sentence.
Around the village lie the hamlets of the valley: Pieve di Marebbe with its pilgrimage church, Rina, the first place in the valley to catch the morning sun, and Longega at the valley entrance. Despite the ski area and the nature park, San Vigilio has kept its quiet character.

Ladin culture
“Bun dé” means good day, “Iolan” thank you. The Ladin people have kept their language, their cuisine and their legends for centuries. On the table you will find barley soup (panicia), filled pasta pockets (cajinci), sweet doughnuts and tultres, fried pastries filled with spinach or sauerkraut.
Many local stories are about the legendary kingdom of Fanes, said to have lain high above San Vigilio. You can learn more about Ladin history and everyday life at the Museum Ladin in San Martino in Badia, just a few minutes away.
